Multi-Generation Family Holidays

Now that lockdown is (finally) easing, we’re betting there will be two things high on the agenda for most parents: reuniting children with their grandparents and going on that longed-for holiday.

At Original Travel, we suggest combining the two by going on a multi-generation holiday. What better way to make up for lost time than by jetting off to sunnier climes for a well-deserved break with your extended family (where any mention of home schooling is officially banned). Now that at least one – and maybe even two – out of the three generations have been fully vaccinated, it’s the perfect time to start planning your ‘3G’ (three generation) holiday. The initial Green List of countries we can travel to quarantine-free may have been limited, but we are hoping this list will continue to grow as the year goes on and all our favourite long-haul destinations will be back in business by next year. Here are our top pick destinations for multi-generation family holidays in 2021 and beyond…

Bush and Beach in Kenya

We know the best private hire lodges – each with their very own private guides and vehicles – throughout Kenya, so you can kick off your trip with a safari in Laikipia or the Masai Mara where everyone aged eight to 108 will be wowed by the wildlife, before heading to the coast for some R&R in a lovely beachfront villa. A trip like this often requires a fair amount of prior planning, so start thinking about it now and travel next year when, hopefully, the notion of quarantine will be a distant memory.

Sri Lanka Family Adventure

One of our all-time favourite countries in Asia – if not the world – is Sri Lanka, which just so happens to fit the bill perfectly for a multi-generational holiday. Boasting beautiful villas right on the beach and activities ranging from whale watching trips, visits to ancient temples, elephant spotting in the national parks, surfing, cooking lessons and the chance to explore the stunning tea plantations (and sample plenty of the local produce), there’s certainly something for everyone.

Sailing & Sun in Corfu

We’re keeping our fingers crossed that some Greek islands will be added to the Green List this summer, and if they are, Corfu would make the perfect spot for a big family holiday. Live like the Durrells (with perhaps slightly fewer animals roaming around) and stay in a villa overlooking the sea and discover all the island has to offer. We’d recommend hiring a boat for the week and spending afternoons on the water, exploring inaccessible coves along the coast and stopping for swims in the crystal-clear water, before heading back for supper in a local taverna.

Family Adventure on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula

Pleasing three generations with one holiday choice can be a struggle, but luckily the Yucatan Peninsula ticks the boxes for all ages. Culture-loving grandparents will love exploring ancient Mayan ruins (with a private guide who is expert at keeping children entertained and engaged as well); adventurous youngsters can swim in the cenotes and explore dense jungle; and foodies of any age will love getting involved in Mexican cooking classes.

Family Fun in the Algarve

Now Portugal is officially on the government’s Green List, it is firmly on our wish list for summer 2021. The Algarve is well-known for being a top spot for families and those credentials certainly stretch to grandparents as well. The region is home to some wonderful hotels with private villas on site, so you get the best of both worlds: the privacy of a villa with the facilities of a hotel. Book in private surfing lessons for the whole family (bonus points for getting the grandparents in the water), enjoy cookery classes, go on sailing adventures, or let the little ones spend time at the kids’ club while you sneak in a round of golf…
